Healthy Hair Growth Tips

Spring is here and you may be thinking it’s time for a change of style. If you’re planning on growing your hair out for the warmer months ahead, follow these tips to ensure you’re doing all you can to keep your hair naturally healthy and prevent unnecessary hair loss.

Eat a Healthy Diet of Vitamins, Proteins and Iron

You’ve heard it before and we’ll say it again. Eating right is an important part of maintaining a healthy head of hair. Your diet should include many vitamins and proteins to prevent premature hair loss and boost shine!

Key vitamins to make sure you’re getting include Vitamin C, Vitamin A, Vitamin E, Vitamin B complex. A daily multi-vitamin is also a good idea. However, check with your doctor before consuming extra vitamins to ensure you’re maintaining healthy levels and not going overboard.

Iron is important to prevent hair loss as well, as it strengthens your hair roots. Eating foods rich in iron, such as spinach, apples, apricots, raisins, liver and meats will help keep your iron levels up.

Proteins play a big role in promoting healthy hair growth, as the keratin cells that comprise your hair strands are made up almost entirely of protein. Without enough protein, early hair loss is likely to happen. Make sure you’re eating enough omega-3 oils, fish or fish oil, lean meat, milk products, poultry, lentils, beans, peanut butter, nuts, tofu, legumes, seeds and essential fatty acids.

Scalp Massages with Natural/Essential Oils

To stimulate your hair follicles and promote growth, keep the blood circulating in your scalp by massaging it somewhat frequently. This also distributes the natural hair oils over your scalp. To supplement this, consider adding an essential oil to boost nutrition.

  • Oils for Naturally Curly or Coarse Hair:

Sesame seed, apricot kernel, grape seed, peach kernel

  • Oils for Thin or Fine Hair:

Sesame seed, apricot kernel, grape seed, peach kernel

Other great natural oils for medium-thick hair include virgin coconut, jojoba, sweet almond and rosehip seed.

Hot Oil Treatments

Use a mix of natural essential oils for a DIY hot oil treatment, which is great for boosting moisture and bounce as well as preventing premature hair loss.

Apply Coconut Oil before Shampooing

As your hair loses some protein every time you shampoo, protect it by massaging a bit of coconut oil to your hair and let it sit for about twenty minutes before you shampoo. Bonus: it helps add shine!

Shampoo Less Frequently

When you shampoo, your hair loses sebum, its natural oil, which provides nutrients to your hair and moisturizes. Instead of every day, try shampooing every 2-3 days or as needed to keep your hair clean. Choose a product with fewer synthetics, chemicals and preservatives when possible.

Avoid Brushing When Wet

Wet hair is prone to breakage and damage, so wait until it is dry before brushing or combing. Wet hair strands can stretch significantly, so remember to treat your damp mane gently!
